Rules:

Players do not compete against each other in the European blackjack. It is played between the player/several players and the dealer. The aim of the game is the beat the dealer.

Every player gets two cards each, including the dealer. Both cards of the players are faced down whereas one of the dealer’s cards which is an open card, is faced up. The dealer can only open his other card after the player has players have played their card.

The game uses between 2-8 (usually 6) card decks devoid of the joker. Cards from 2-9 have their respective numerical value. That is, a card with the value 2 is worth 2. All the face cards are worth 10, which means that the Jack, Queen and the King are worth 10 each. Aces are worth 11 (1 depending on how the game proceeds). If you have an ace in your hand, it is known as “soft” since you can change its value to either 12 or 1. Else it is known as “hard”. The goal of the game is to get a hand of 21.

You can get 21 straightaway if one of your cards is a face card and one is an ace (10+11=21). But if the dealer also gets has this blackjack hand, the game goes in the “push” mode, and the player loses the total wager. The catch is to keep playing the game without exceeding 21. It is a bust if this happens and the dealer or the player loses immediately. If the dealer busts, players win even money. If you get a hand lower than 21 then you can either choose to surrender and retain half your original wager or continue the game in the following ways:

Stand: by not opting for an additional card and keeping your existing card

Hit: ask for another card if you want to improve your score

Double down: double your original bet and get another card You need to stand once you get the card.

Split: split your hand into moieties only if both have the same value. Each hand has a separate bet and is played independently. You cannot split 4, 5 and 10 valued cards.

If the dealer’s first card is an ace or a 10 valued card, he cannot check for his blackjack till the end of his hand. You do not know if the dealer has a blackjack and hence you stand to lose more money.
