Even though the future of this tournament doesn’t depend on the result of this game you can expect both sides to play with full passion. These two sides don’t know any other way to play the game. Also, Bangladesh and Afghanistan rivalry is one of the growing rivalries of the game. These two sides took on each other in a T20 series played in India this year where Afghanistan emerged victorious in a very passionate series.

So far in ODI cricket in the last five games played between these two sides, Bangladesh have had the upper hand by beating Afghanistan in 3 games out of the 5. But what needs to be kept in mind is Afghanistan is one of the newest cricket playing nations and that record isn’t bad especially since the last time these two sides met in Asia Cup Afghanistan beat Bangladesh by 32 runs.

The core of both the sides have remained the same since that game but some of the dynamics of the Afghanistan side has changed since then. Afghanistan then had some of the fine pacers in Shapoor Zadran and Hamid Hassan and likes of Rashid Khan and Mujeeb Ur Rahman hadn’t emerged at the international stage. Now their bowling mostly revolves around the spinners and they do the fine strangulation job of the scoring rate in middle overs.

Bangladesh, on the other hand, is driven by the experience of Mushfiqur Rahim, Shakib Al Hasan and Mashrafe Mortaza. These three are the reason why Bangladesh has become such a rising force in limited overs cricket in past few years. That came to fore even in the first game when despite being in a hopeless situation of 3-3 technically they reached the fine score helped by the fabulous hundred by Mushfiqur Rahim.

Their bowlers then are always a force in these kinds of surfaces and that is what they proved once again against Sri Lanka. Their bowlers led by Mashrafe Mortaza bowled to their plan and never allowed Sri Lankan batsmen to get on top of the game and suffocated them of the scoring rate.

In a dead rubber, both the teams would like to rest some of their players because of the heat and tight scheduling in the tournament. Likes of Rahim, Shakib could be rested for this game from Bangladesh side while Mohammed Shahzad from Afghanistan side could be rested for this game. This would present the youngsters with the opportunity to impress their team especially with World Cup in mind.

Bangladesh and Afghanistan will clash in a Group B dead rubber. Quite unexpectedly Sri Lanka has now been knocked out of the tournament after being beaten by Bangladesh in the first game and then by Afghanistan in their second game. It will be the last group game of the tournament before the super four begins. It Is going to be a dead rubber as irrespective of which team wins they are going through to the super six and their clash is almost decided as Bangladesh will take on India in the first super four matches and Afghanistan will take on Pakistan.

The team batting first has won most of the games in the tournament so far with the exception of Pakistan who defeated Hong Kong in a small run chase. It is an interesting tactic of saving your bowlers from sapping heat first up and then letting them bowl under the lights. This tournament is so far defying the recent traditions of International Cricket where teams are winning games by chasing the score. Hence, expect another bat first decision from the team winning the toss.

Pitches in Dubai have provided the good bounce to the bowlers. Due to the good bounce batsmen too can trust the surface and play the strokes on the up. Hence, we can expect the score of around 250-275 for the team batting first. Conditions are expected to be dry.

Afghanistan will begin as slight favourites for this game especially if Bangladesh decides to rest Mushfiqur Rahim and Shakib Al Hasan. Even if they don’t Afghanistan have got the goods to surprise Bangladesh as well.
