The build-up to the previous game had everything: the regular burst of jingoism from fans of both the sides, some mandatory pessimism from both sides which works as anti-jinx, some regular enthusiasm from the excited group of fans. Everything but competitive cricket. The stage was set for an exciting game, but it didn’t quite materialize that way for teams, organisers and fans.

Right from the beginning of the game, India didn’t allow Pakistani batsmen to get away after they decided to bat first on winning the toss. Pakistan would have hoped for a similar start like they did in the Champions Trophy final, however, unlike then the bowlers especially Jasprit Bumrah didn’t err on his discipline with regards to no-balls. Both Bumrah and Bhuvaneshwar Kumar bowled a stellar opening spell where latter reaped the rewards of former’s pressure. Kumar dismissed both the openers and after 10 overs Pakistan were 25-2.

But then Shoaib Malik who is known to save his best for India, along with Babar Azam began to counterattack and it looked like they would take Pakistan to a score of safety. But this Indian attack is different from the previous generation attacks. They look to take wickets through their skilled spin twins and they didn’t disappoint. Kuldeep Yadav dismissed Azam with a beauty and Shoaib Malik was lazy with his running between the wicket.

Post Malik’s dismissal there was no resistance from Pakistan and they were soon dismissed for 162 runs. This was a below-par total on a good pitch and Indians began solidly in reply. Rohit Sharma who has been dismissed in the past by Mohammed Aamir played him with caution and attacked at the other end. After reaching the 50 he was dismissed by Shahdab Khan. Shikhar Dhawan too continued his good form from the last game and looked fluent while his stay for 46 runs. The result was then merely a formality and it was completed by the pair of Ambati Rayudu and Dinesh Karthik.

Despite the hammering in the previous game against India, Pakistan would not be worried. They have come back from these situations in the past most recently in the Champions Trophy itself where after being beaten comprehensively by India in the first round they beat them in the final. Pakistan can completely overhaul their performance and hence, should be taken lightly at all.

India, on the other hand, are in confident space right now and they would like to do their basics right once again. Their middle order remains untested so far and they would like them to get a good hit considering the World Cup in mind. Their bowling looks in fine form despite the extreme conditions in Dubai.

It is now time for round 2 between the two of the fiercest rivals in Cricket. After playing once already in the tournament in the group stage they will be clashing in the super four games. In the previous game played between the two sides, India emerged victorious by a big margin of 8 wickets. This game will be far more important than the earlier one as this game will have direct implications on which team reaches the final. The final of the Asia Cup will be played on 28th September.

Most of the sides have won while batting first in the tournament. The effect of spin in the second half is making the things difficult for batsmen in the second half. As a result, teams would like to bat first here as well.

Pitches in Dubai have been tough to score with some exceptions here and there. There have been many low scores and some high scores. The highest score so far has been of India against Hong Kong when they scored 285. Pitches will continue to assist the bowlers and the scores of 260-280 should be expected at maximum. Conditions are expected to be very hot.

India will begin as favourites for this game because of the performance in their last game. Their bowlers look in fine rhythm and batsmen like Rohit and Dhawan are looking in good touch. Pakistan will have to bat well if they are going to put pressure on India.
