Cricket Match Preview:

India and West Indies are coming off arguably the two best cricket games of the tournament. While Afghanistan stretched India more than anyone could have imagined, West Indies were left with plenty of what-ifs when Carlos Brathwaite was caught at long just meters inside by Trent Boult. So, while India scrapped through, West Indies could not.

Apart from New Zealand, India are the only second side who have remained unbeaten in the tournament so far. But like all other sides in the tournament, their vulnerabilities got exposed against Afghanistan. When Virat Kohli won the toss and decided to bat first, there were murmurs of whether India will score 350 or 400. But what transpired in the next four hours did not go according to plan.

It was not the easiest pitch but India’s middle order consisting of Vijay Shankar, MS Dhoni and Kedar Jadhav, who was promoted to get more game time, did not exactly give a great account of themselves. While Vijay Shankar looked good in his brief stay, he played a poor shot and lost his wicket. Post Kohli’s dismissal, Dhoni and Jadhav got stuck but never got going. They were completely shackled by the three spinners of Afghanistan and India ended up with an under-par score of 224 runs.

West Indies do not care about what people or pundits make of their approach in 50 over format. They are essentially playing an extended version of T20 in their mind and have approached batting in a similar mould. But that has its own disadvantages; at various stages in their run chase against New Zealand, West Indies were far ahead of the required rate but kept playing their shots and lost quick wickets. Hence, despite Carlos Brathwaite’s great knock, it should not have come down to that.

This is going to be an important game for both these teams. While India will be looking to get closer to the semi-final spot, West Indies will be looking to stay alive. India will have three games left after this game but as we saw during their game against Afghanistan, they would not want to leave it too late and lose the momentum. They would like to get back to their best as soon as possible.

Cricket Match Information:
