These two sides last met in ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier at Harare in March this year. Afghanistan beat Ireland than by 5 wickets then and went on to eventually win the Tournament. Contrary to the T20s which has been played between the two sides, in ODIs Ireland have competed better. In the last 5 games between the two sides, Afghanistan has won 3 games while Ireland has won 2.

Ireland would like to stay competitive for they have begun to look overawed by Afghanistan. It’s easy to be overawed as well, Afghanistan’s stocks are rising in International game, their players are becoming superstars of every league they are playing in. On the other hand, while Ireland began the movement of Associates sides they are now in danger of falling behind. Their players aren’t being picked up in the leagues around the world, the Porterfields, O’Brien is now senior men of the team and no new superstars are emerging.

Afghanistan, on the other hand, is unleashing youngsters one after another, the latest addition being Zazai who scored a quick-fire fifties in first two T20 Internationals. It’s a shame that he hasn’t made to the squad. While their old stalwarts like Mohammed Nabi, Mohammed Shahzad, Ashgar Stanikzai are still going strong. It’s their youngsters like Rashid Khan, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Rahmat Shah who are wreaking havoc everywhere. Especially Rashid Khan and Mujeeb Ur Rahman have been tormenting batsmen all over.

However, Ireland will be quietly hoping that they can control Afghanistan’s spinner in the longer format. With no pressure of scoring quickly, their batsmen can afford to take some time and look to score when the opportunity presents itself. To lead the way Ireland would look at Paul Stirling who has been Ireland’s highest scorer in last one year by scoring 587 runs and their captain William Porterfield who has scored 506 runs during the same time. Ireland would also be hoping that their experienced bowlers like Boyd Rankin can restrict Afghanistan stroke makers early.

Afghanistan too will have the challenge of changing their games from T20 to ODIs. In order to do that they would need likes of Rahmat Shah who has scored 632 runs in past one year to take control. This would allow their stroke makers to play their natural game. It might do a bit early in the innings hence, Afghanistan will have to be a bit careful by not being too ambitious early in the innings.

After winning the T20 leg of the tour Afghanistan looks to extend their dominance over Ireland. They thoroughly dominated the series both with the bat and ball. While with the bat they found a new superstar in Hazratullah Zazai who scored half-centuries in first two games of the series. This will be first of the three ODIs scheduled to be played between the two sides.

Considering that it might do a little at the start of the innings both teams would like to make early use of it. Teams winning the toss would like to chase and with growing success rate for teams while chasing will also prompt them to do so. Afghanistan especially will fancy their chances by restricting Ireland early in the innings and then chase down the total. Ireland, on the other hand, would like their pacers to do the damage early and restrict Afghans to as low a total as possible so that they can bat without can scoreboard pressure against their spinners.

Pitch will be conducive to fast bowling at the start and will gradually become easier to bat on. Rain is not expected on the match day and we can expect the full game.

It’s hard to look beyond Afghanistan for the opening game. They have momentum on their side after winning the T20 series. Their recent dominance over Ireland also is a big factor in this game and the series. It’s time Ireland turn the tide towards them and start winning otherwise it may soon lead to a mental block against their arch-rivals if that’s not already the case. Hence, our prediction for this game in Afghanistan.

Who will Win? – Afghanistan
Top Batsman (Runs Scored) – 50+, Rahmat Shah
