Cricket Match Preview:

New Zealand are a team that everybody seems to be aware of but whenever there is a talk of ultimate favourites of the World Cup every time it begins, their name never pops up. They were the runners-up of the 2015 World Cup played in Australia and New Zealand. Surely, they would do one better this time. Sri Lanka, on the other hand, are lucky to be featured in this tournament. Their record in the last four years has been so poor that it is a miracle they did not had to play the qualifying tournament.

If the warm-ups are anything to go by, New Zealand look pretty sorted. They easily beat one of the tournament favourites, India, in their first warm-up game. In the second cricket game, they came up against the madness of the batting of West Indies, who are just treating it as an extended version of the T20 game. While New Zealand lost the game, they still gave a good account of themselves with the bat and will not be too concerned.

Sri Lanka, on the other hand, have been quite poor and even in the warm-ups, there was very little to feel enthusiastic about. One positive thing would have been the performance of newly appointed skipper Dimuth Karunaratne. While his batting looks sedate by modern day standards, it is something the Sri Lankan team, prone to collapses, could do with. Sri Lanka will need their experienced players like Angelo Matthews and Lasith Malinga to be at their best and guide the rest of the team along with them.

If the pitch will have something to offer, New Zealand become an extremely difficult side to face. Their bowlers like Trent Boult and Tim Southee wreaked havoc in the last World Cup in similar conditions and they did the damage again against India in the first warm-up game. Sri Lanka would be hoping it is a flat pitch as it will level the playing ground for them and they would hope that Lasith Malinga shows his magic once again.

Cricket Match Information:

New Zealand will begin their cricket World Cup campaign against Sri Lanka at Cardiff. This will be the third game of this edition of World Cup. New Zealand are one of the most consistent sides of this competition, but the catch is they have not won it ever. Will they win it this time? Sri Lanka, on the other hand, have won the tournament back in 1996 but have been a struggling side in the last four years.

New Zealand

Probable XI (Our Prediction):

New Zealand will be led by Kane Williamson in the World Cup. Our prediction is of the inclusion of Matt Henry in the lineup despite going for over a hundred runs in the warm-up game against West Indies.

Here is our prediction of New Zealand’s playing XI:

  • Martin Guptill
  • Colin Munro
  • Kane Williamson
  • Ross Taylor
  • Henry Nicholls
  • Jimmy Neesham
  • Colin de Grandhomme
  • Trent Boult
  • Tim Southee
  • Mitchell Santner
  • Matt Henry

Sri Lanka

Probable XI (Our Prediction):

Sri Lanka have a new captain in Dimuth Karunaratne and he will be looking to change the fortune of a struggling side. Our prediction is of the inclusion of Lasith Malinga in this game of cricket as he has not been part of the squad since they have reached England.

Here is our prediction of Sri Lanka’s playing XI:

  • Dimuth Karunaratne
  • Lahiru Thirimanne
  • Kusal Mendis
  • Kusal Perera
  • Angelo Matthews
  • Thisara Perera
  • Dhananjaya de Silva
  • Lasith Malinga
  • Suranga Lakmal
  • Nuwan Pradeep
  • I Udana

Cricket Statistics and Prediction:

Martin Guptill is one of the fearsome openers of modern-day cricket. In fact, he is being billed as one of the batsmen who could score even a double hundred in this competition. Our prediction is of a hard-hitting knock from him.

Cricket Match Conditions and Pitch:

The last international ODI cricket game played here was between Australia and England in 2018. England won that cricket game by 38 runs after putting up 342 runs. Our prediction is of the score of around 300 once again especially if New Zealand bat first. Conditions are expected to be cold and windy.

Our Prediction:

New Zealand will begin this game of cricket as favourites. They have beaten Sri Lanka in each of their last five ODIs. Hence, our prediction is of New Zealand’s victory.

Top Batsman (Prediction):

Martin Guptill (NZ) – 50+ runs

Top Bowler (Prediction):

Trent Boult (NZ) – 2 or more wickets
