A team on losing streak, Pakistan, will take on a team that seems to have found their mojo back, West Indies, in the second cricket game of the World Cup. While Pakistan are coming into the tournament after losing their warm-up game against Afghanistan, West Indies are fresh off a splendid performance against New Zealand in their final warm-up.
Very few teams roll like Pakistan. If one looks at their record pre and post that Champions Trophy victory in 2017, it just does not inspire confidence. But that is quintessential Pakistan. Nobody expected them to win the title in 2017 Champions Trophy, least of all against India, whom they have had a poor record at world events. But not only did they win the title, but they also hammered India in the final. West Indies, on the other hand, do not have a great record for decades. But something has changed in their cricket in recent times. Ever since Chris Gayle has been included in the eleven, they are almost playing an extended T20 brand of cricket in ODIs. They took on England in their backyard a few months ago and held them to a 2-2 draw. It was a series that saw some really high scores and West Indies matched England for score-to-score. Anybody who has been watching cricket in the last four years knows that is not a mean task.
Pakistan should not also be too worried about themselves as their batsmen looked in fine form in the cricket series against England. Albeit they lost the series by 4-0, their batsmen consistently raked up scores of over 300 runs. If they can get their bowling sorted, they can gain some momentum in the tournament. For now, they will have to contend with the mavericks of Caribbean Islands, and it is not going to be easy.
