Sri Lanka has had the upper hand over Bangladesh in limited overs cricket historically. In the 44 games played between the two sides, Sri Lanka leads by a huge margin of 36 wins whereas Bangladesh has only won 6 games. In the last 5 games played between the two sides as well, Sri Lanka has won 3 games while Bangladesh beat them once. One game was abandoned due to rain.

However, any cricket lover would agree that this Bangladesh side is a force to reckon with, especially in those venues where conditions tend to remain dry and pitches offer to turn to their many spinners in the line-up. Their recent success in the ICC tournaments as well shows the same fact. They reached the quarterfinal in the 2015 World Cup played in Australia which can be termed as their watershed moment in the game. Since then they have gone on to become one of the toughest sides to beat at home and a competitive side in neutral or overseas conditions.

Sri Lanka, on the other hand, has always been a tough side especially in these parts of the world. However, recent times have not been kind to them result wise. Their leadership has become a bit of musical chair due to injury and other reasons. They are not winning many games at the moment. Since the retirement of legends like Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardena, they are in the transition phase and this phase is taking longer than planned for those involved with Sri Lankan cricket.

Bangladesh has continued their rise in 2018 as well, they reached the finals of the Nidahas trophy where they got beaten on the last ball by India. Post that they won the overseas ODI series in West Indies where they beat the host by the margin of 2-1. Their core group of Mushfiqur Rahim, Mahmudullah, Mashrafe Mortaza, Tamim Iqbal and Shakib Al Hasan are a force to reckon with and it is this group that is carrying the rest of group forward. It’s a good place to be in if you are a Bangladesh supporter right now.

Sri Lanka’s slide has continued this year where on one hand they couldn’t qualify for the final in the Nidahas Trophy played in their own country. They also got beaten by South Africa in the ODI series. Angelo Matthews has a huge task on his hand to control this downward slide. He has a good combination of attacking batsmen in the lineup and they have always had good spinners in their line-up. However, keeping the World Cup in mind next year it will be important if their fast bowlers to show the consistency.

Sri Lanka will take on Bangladesh in the opening game of the latest edition of Asia Cup. This Group B clash will mark the beginning of the 13-day tournament. Apart from these two teams, Afghanistan is the third member of the Group B. The first game of Group A will be played on 16th when the new entrant Hong Kong will take on Pakistan. The third and final member of Group A, India will play its first game on 18th September against Hong Kong. Post the group games the top 4 teams will play in the Super Four beginning from 21st September. The final will be played on the 28th of September.

Since it will be the first game of the tournament the nature of the pitch is still unknown. The last ODI was played here between Papua New Guinea and Scotland, the scores then were of under 200. Hence, due to the unknown factor teams would like to chase the total on winning the toss.

The scores have tended to be low here but with superior sides playing in the tournament expect that to rise up. Pitches in Dubai generally tend to be slow and get drier as the day progresses. Conditions are expected to be absolutely dry.

Bangladesh on the current form looks to be far better side than Sri Lanka. While Sri Lanka does have some of the exciting talents in their side, it’s Bangladesh who is looking more settled right now. The right mix of experience and youth is Bangladesh’s USP and they would begin as a favourite in the first game.
