In a rare game against the full member team, Afghanistan would like to make the most of this opportunity. Afghanistan was last seen in action on 31st August against Ireland. They defeated Ireland in a three-match ODI series by 2-0. Afghanistan last played Sri Lanka in the 2015 World Cup when they gave the subcontinental side the scare of their life. Sent in to bat first by Sri Lanka, Afghanistan scored a respectable 232 runs. They really came into their own while defending the total when they had Sri Lanka 51-4 at one stage. Ultimately the experience of Sri Lanka helped them prevail.

Since then Afghanistan has made great strides in the International Cricket. From being an associate side, they have become a force to reckon with. No side can afford to take them lightly now. They have got an interesting mix of players who are young and others who have been playing for a while. They have bowlers like Rashid Khan who is ruling the bowling charts across various T20 leagues. They also have Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Mohammad Nabi who will give strength to their bowling. On batting front as well, they have a young man like Rahmat Shah who has been their highest scorer in past one year with the total of 726 runs. They also have the maverick Mohammad Shahzad who will play in his own way.

Sri Lanka has been under turmoil for a while now. Ever since the retirement of old guards like Mahela Jayawardena and Kumar Sangakkara they have been in a transition period. Now they do have some fine talents in their top 5 but the stability is missing. Everything needs to be held together by Angelo Matthews who needs to stay fit for the benefit of his team.

On the bowling front, the big news has been the return of the legend Lasith Malinga. The way he bowled in the first ODI against Bangladesh means that we might just get to see him in his 4th world cup. He was brilliantly supported at the top by Suranga Lakmal as well who bowled a disciplined line and length in the first game. Along with these two, they also have the services of Thisara Perera who will be important with both bat and the ball.

Sri Lanka is an exciting batting unit but one that is vulnerable. Hence, if Afghanistan can hold their own with the ball we might have a match on our hands.

Afghanistan will take on Sri Lanka in their first game of Asia Cup. Overall it will be the third game of the tournament and second game of Group B. Each team are supposed to play two games in the group stage before moving on to Super Four. The Super Four is scheduled to begin on 21st September. The top two teams will then play in the final which is scheduled to be played on 28th September.

In the first game, Bangladesh opted to bat first and we saw Angelo Matthews saying that he wanted to bat first as well. Considering carry on the pitch and dew factor in the second innings teams may want to bat second now. Knowing what to chase is proving to be better than otherwise.

Pitch was dry but had a good carry in the first game. That would have pleasantly surprised all the teams in the tournament. That would mean batsman can look to score freely and trust the surface whereas bowlers will get a good bounce if they are ready to bend their backs. Conditions are expected to be dry and hot.

Sri Lanka will surely begin as the favourite for this game. They have the experience and now the presence of Lasith Malinga gives them that added edge. Afghanistan would like to compete well and prove that their qualification in the World Cup was not a fluke. They need to consistently challenge the big boys now if they want to be confident come the world cup.
