Cricket Match Preview:
England team will begin their long tour of Sri Lanka by playing the ODI series first. Keeping the 2019 cricket World Cup in mind, it is going to be a very important series for both teams. England’s ODI team is currently number one in the ICC ranking and they have been playing like a champion team ever since the debacle of 2015 World Cup down under. It is going to be a good test for this team as it will tell us how well they can adapt on spin-friendly surfaces in Sri Lanka.
For Sri Lanka, it is going to be an extremely important series for multiple reasons. Their cricket team seem in disarray. They have begun to lose games everywhere be it at home or away. They could not make it to the second round of Asia Cup, in which they were defeated by Bangladesh and new entrants Afghanistan. What followed was even worse. Their skipper Angelo Matthews had to go through public humiliation after the coach publicly questioned his fitness and running between the wickets. Ultimately, Matthews was sacked from captaincy yet again and also dropped from the side. Dinesh Chandimal has been made the captain now and it is going to be a great challenge for him to win against this England side.
For England, it will be the simple case of doing what they have been doing. No side has played with such fearlessness as they have since the 2015 World Cup. No side has scored as many 300 plus scores as them and even 400 has been breached quite often by them. They passed their big test in the form of India a few months back with flying colours, when they beat Virat Kohli-led India by 2-1 in ODI series. Although the Sri Lankan pitches will test their batting line up, they simply have too much ability to be troubled by it.
Their bowling, however, is not the strongest and that is where Sri Lanka must come in. Sri Lanka still have some fine young players in Kusal Mendis and Kusal Perera but they would do well to stick with them rather than chopping and changing them in every cricket game. Sri Lanka are going to be an underdog in this series and they could use this to their advantage and surprise England.
Cricket Match Information:
England’s tour of Sri Lanka begins with the first ODI at Dambulla. In a long cricket tour, England will play 5 ODIs, 1 T20 and 3 Test matches. ODI leg will be especially interesting as it will be a good test of this fantastic English team, who are currently number 1 in the ICC rankings. They have won the series everywhere, barring subcontinent when they lost the series against India in India by 2-1.
Probable XI (Our Prediction):
England won their cricket ODI series against India in style back home. They have retained almost the same squad with David Willey missing and our prediction is they will start with the same eleven as their second last game, with just Sam Curran in place of David Willey.
Here is our prediction of England’s playing XI:
- Jason Roy
- J Bairstow
- Joe Root
- Eoin Morgan
- Ben Stokes
- Jos Butler
- Moeen Ali
- Sam Curran
- Adil Rashid
- L Plunkett
- Mark Wood
Probable XI (Our Prediction):
Sri Lanka have been miserable in recent times. Their captaincy and teams keep on changing in almost every series. Our prediction is to expect some changes since their last game in Asia Cup.
Here is our prediction of Sri Lanka’s playing XI:
- Kusal Mendis
- Upul Tharanga
- Dinesh Chandimal
- Kusal Perera
- NLTC Perera
- MD Shanaka
- Akila Dhananjaya
- Lasith Malinga
- PVD Chameera
- Dhananjaya de Silva
- PADLR Sandakan
Cricket Statistics and Prediction:
Joe Root is going to be a crucial player for England. They have batsmen who can go big from ball one but Root can hold the innings together. Our prediction is to expect not only a good game but a good series from him.
Cricket Match Conditions and Pitch:
The last ODI played here was between South Africa and Sri Lanka. In that game of cricket, 244 runs were scored by Sri Lanka and they could not defend it. However, considering it is England, and if they bat first, we should expect more runs to be scored. Hence, our prediction is to expect the scores around 290-300 from team batting first. Conditions are expected to be dry for this game of cricket.
England will begin the series as clear favourites. They are the number 1 side in the world and though Sri Lanka are playing at home, our prediction is England will emerge victorious.
Top Batsman (Prediction):
Joe Root (ENG) – 50+ runs
Top Bowler (Prediction):
Akila Dhananjaya – 2 or more wickets
Most Sixes (Prediction):
Jos Butler (ENG)
Sri Lanka – 3.00
England – 1.39
