Cricket Match Preview:

The action will continue at the Big Bash League as Sydney Thunder will take on Melbourne Stars in their respective first cricket game of the league. Both teams will be looking to win their first game so that they can kick off their season in style. Both the sides had a disappointing time last season as both finished their campaign without reaching the semifinals.

Sydney Thunder will be led by Shane Watson once again. The former Australian all-rounder will look to target the semifinal spot on this occasion after missing out on it last season. He will be supported in his cause this year by two Englishmen, Joe Root and Jos Butler, who were arguably the biggest signing of this year’s Big Bash League.

Melbourne Stars, on the other hand, will be led by mercurial Glenn Maxwell. Maxwell will be looking to resurrect the fortune of Stars in this season after their miserable season last year when they finished at 8th spot. He will miss the experienced pair of Kevin Peterson and Luke Wright this time around as both have hung up their boots. However, he will have experienced Dwayne Bravo and Nepal’s young talent, Sandeep Lamichhane, as his trump card.

In their last 5 cricket games against each other, Sydney Thunder have had the upper hand with 4 wins out of last 4 recent encounters. This winning streak goes back to the 2015 season for Thunder. It was also in 2015 that Stars managed to beat the Thunder for the last time. Stars have had very consistent results up until last year, before that they had finished as semifinalists in the 5 of the 7 seasons of the tournament. Thunder, on the other hand, have been generally poor except in season 5, when they finished as the winner of the tournament.

Cricket Match Information:

Post an underwhelming season, both Sydney Thunder and Melbourne Stars will take on each other and kick off their campaign in this edition of Big Bash League. While Sydney Thunder finished at number 6th position, the Stars finished at number 8th position in last year’s Big Bash League.

Sydney Thunder

Probable XI (Our Prediction):

Sydney Thunder will be led by Shane Watson in this tournament once again. However, they will be without Usman Khawaja in the initial part of the tournament as he is part of Australia’s cricket test team. They will be joined, however, by English pair of Jos Butler and Joe Root. Our prediction is of inclusion of both the English pair in the first cricket game.

Here is our prediction of Sydney Thunder’s playing XI:

  • Shane Watson
  • Jos Butler
  • Joe Root
  • C Ferguson
  • Arjun Nair
  • JS Lenton
  • Anton Devcich
  • Chris Jordan
  • Fawad Ahmed
  • Daniel Sams
  • Chris Green

Melbourne Stars

Probable XI (Our Prediction):

Melbourne Stars will be led by Glenn Maxwell in this season. Our prediction is he will go with the experience of Dwayne Bravo and youthfulness of Sandeep Lamichhane in the first cricket game.

Here is our prediction of Melbourne Stars’ playing XI:

  • Glenn Maxwell
  • Marcus Stoinis
  • Dwayne Bravo
  • Ben Dunk
  • Adam Zampa
  • Liam Plunkett
  • Sandeep Lamichhane
  • Jackson Coleman
  • Nick Maddinson
  • Travis Dean
  • Jackson Bird

Cricket Statistics and Prediction:

Mohammad Nabi is one of the superstars of Afghanistan cricket. In the absence of Dwayne Bravo, he will be expected to play the role of an all-rounder. Our prediction is he will prove to be useful as an all-rounder in the first cricket game of Renegades.

Cricket Match Conditions and Pitch:

After a gap of almost 12 years, it will be the second consecutive cricket game on this ground. The last international cricket game played here was between Australia and South Africa all the way back in 2006. It will be interesting to see how the pitch plays. Our prediction is of 160 runs, which should prove to be competitive. Conditions are expected to be dry.

Our Prediction:

We predict Sydney Thunder as the winner for this game of cricket. They seem to have more star power and experience in their rank with the inclusion of English duo of Joe Root and Jos Butler. Stars, on the other hand, will have to settle down to a combination first as it seems a bit haywire at this stage of the tournament.

Top Batsman (Prediction):

Jos Butler (ST) – 50+ runs

Top Bowler (Prediction):

Sandeep Lamichhane (MS) – 2 or more wickets

Most Sixes (Prediction):

Jos Butler (ST)
