Cricket Match Preview:
So, the tournament that began on 16th September with the game between Victoria and Queensland will end on 10th of October, with a promising encounter between Victoria and Tasmania. It has been a very closely fought cricket tournament with each team threatening to win games against each other. Queensland, which was languishing at the bottom after the group stage, made it to the semi-final, while Western Australia, who were unbeaten in the group stage, were surprised in the semi-final by Victoria.
It has been a wonderful tournament for Victoria, where they seem to have peaked at the right time. They lost their last group game after the washout in previous cricket game and it looked like it will be really difficult for them to face the top contender in Western Australia. However, as it happens so often in these tournaments, one good day can change your entire fortune. In the semi-final, they chose to bat first and scored a huge 332 runs helped by a fine 50 from skipper Peter Handscomb and equally important 58 by Nick Maddinson.
The defence of 332 was not going to be easy as they had to do so against the best batting lineup in the competition. Not only Western Australia had been scoring runs, but they were also doing so by breaking records. But Victoria, with the help of their bits and pieces spinners, managed to strike regularly and won the game of cricket quite easily by 63 runs and went through to the final.
Tasmania’s journey in the JLT cup has been pretty consistent so far. They were the second best side in the tournament after Western Australia with three wins out five cricket games in group stages. In the semi-final against the mercurial Queensland, they were absolutely clinical with both the ball and bat. On choosing to field first, they sent the dangerous Queensland to bat first and kept picking up wickets in regular interval. Every bowler chipped in with wickets and they dismissed Queensland to 177. Post that, all they had to do was to bat sensibly and that was what they did, with skipper George Bailey top scoring through his knock of 70 off 97 deliveries. In the end, Tasmania easily won the first semi-final by six wickets with 13 overs remaining.
It is going to be an exciting final between two good sides. In the earlier game between the two sides, Tasmania had won the game of cricket against Victoria easily by 65 runs. It remains to be seen if Tasmania can repeat the feat.
