Cricket Match Preview:

Such has been the dominance of West Indies over the cricket world that despite struggling for nearly two decades, their head-to-head record is still respectable. Their head-to-head record against India is very impressive, despite the fact that it is hard to remember the last time they won the series against India, be it at home or away. As it stands right now, out of the total 94 test matches played between the two sides, West Indies have won 30 matches while India have only won 18 games and 46 games have been drawn between the two sides.

For India, this test series presents itself with the opportunity to learn from the mistakes committed on the tours of England and South Africa. They are scheduled to travel to Australia after this series and they would not like to repeat the same mistakes. Virat Kohli is back for India after a brief rest during the Asia Cup. Apart from him, other test regulars have also returned, like Cheteshwar Pujara, Ravichandran Ashwin and Ajinkya Rahane.

Selectors have decided to move away from Shikhar Dhawan and Murali Vijay, who were the openers for India when the test series began in England. In place of Dhawan, they have included Prithvi Shaw and Mayank Agarwal. It remains to be seen whether India will go with the rawness of Prithvi Shaw or the consistency of Agarwal.

For West Indies, it will be all about showing their improvement. Under Stuart Law, who is set to relinquish his role as coach after the Bangladesh tour, they have made some good stride in Test Cricket. They won a test match in England, while, in their last two series at home, they emerged victorious against Bangladesh and drew the series against Sri Lanka.

Led by Jason Holder, they have an inspirational leader who is currently at the peak of his powers with both bat and ball. They also have a very good fast bowling lineup due to the presence of Shanon Gabriel and Kemar Roach, who will be missing the first test. They also have the presence of some useful spinners like Roston Chase and Devendra Bishoo. So clearly, if there is something on the pitch, you can count on them to perform and play some good cricket.

India will be strong favourites to win this series as they normally are in any home series, but if they truly want to be a strong force in overseas tests, they will have to improve on their batting. It is because of their batting in the last two series that they have been on the wrong side of the results, despite being good with the ball.

Cricket Match Information:

India and West Indies will take on each other in the first test match at Rajkot. It will be the first game of this West Indies tour of India. West Indies are scheduled to play two Test Matches, five ODIs and three T20 international games on this tour. For India, it will be the next assignment after the successful defence of Asia Cup. After this test series, they are next going to play the test series in Australia later this year.

Probable XI (Our Prediction):

India will have a new opener for this test match. They will also be without their star performers of England tour, Ishant Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah. Hence, our prediction is to expect an extra pacer if the pitch has extra grass and bounce, else they may also play an extra spinner.

Here is our prediction of India’s playing XI:

  • KL Rahul
  • Prithvi Shaw/Mayank Agarwal
  • Cheteshwar Pujara
  • Ajinkya Rahane
  • Rishabh Pant
  • Hanuma Vihari
  • Ravindra Jadeja
  • Ravichandran Ashwin
  • Mohammed Shami
  • Umesh Yadav
  • Kuldeep Yadav/Mohammed Siraj

West Indies

Probable XI (Our Prediction):

Kemar Roach will not be playing the first test match due to the death of his grandmother. Hence, our prediction is that they might look for another pacer to replace him.

Here is our prediction of West Indies’ playing XI:

  • K Brathwaite
  • KOA Powell
  • Shai Hope
  • SO Hetmyer
  • Roston Chase
  • Shanon Dowrich
  • Jason Holder
  • Devendra Bishoo
  • Shanon Gabriel
  • KMA Paul
  • JA Warrican

Cricket Statistics and Prediction:

Mayank Agarwal has been piling on runs for the last few years in the domestic circuit. Now, he might be getting his first opportunity if India decides to go with the weight of domestic runs. Hence, our prediction is if he does get the opportunity here, he might prove his worth instantly in his first international cricket game.

Cricket Match Conditions and Pitch:

There are reports suggesting that Team management has asked for bouncy pitches in this series to prepare for Australian series later in the year. If that is the case, then it will bring West Indies bowlers into the action as well. The true nature of Indian surface, however, is still to provide the spin. Hence, our prediction is to expect a typical Indian surface.

Our Prediction:

India will be strong favourites for this game. Every team is winning the series at home and this one should not be different. This West Indies side, however, have the bowling line up to trouble an underconfident Indian batting line up. Still, our prediction is to expect an Indian win.

Top Batsman (Prediction):

Cheteshwar Pujara (IND) – 100+ runs

Top Bowler (Prediction):

Ravindra Jadeja (IND) – 5 or more wickets

Most Sixes (Prediction):

Rishabh Pant (IND)

  • As per the cricket records from the last two decades, we can say that West Indies is hardly reaching finals in world cup. Despite of these facts the team is actually improving its playing strategy and skills among the new generation of its cricketers, which will probably give the good competition to India or other countries in the nearby future.
